During the Second World War, as during the First World War, Canadians again served under familiar symbols. They wore maple leaf cap and collar badges on their uniforms. ΓÇ£The Maple LeafΓÇ¥ was the title of the Canadian armed forces newspaper. At first they fought under the Union Jack. In November 1943, the RCAF directed that the Canadian Red Ensign was to be flown by all units serving with the forces of other nations. In January 1944 the Canadian Army issued a similar order. It seemed that the Canadian Red Ensign had become, in practice, the Canadian flag.
